Teaching Latin Root: ced, ceed, cess = go

What it is

The Latin root ced, also spelled ceed and cess, means to go. To succeed is to go up to a goal, to recede is to go back, a process is the way a thing goes forward step by step, a procedure is the set way to go about a task, and a recess is a going back from work for a rest.

When a child is ready

Teach it once the child has met a root with more than one spelling, such as scrib and script.

If they struggle

Three spellings hide one root. Sort the words by spelling (ced, ceed, cess), then read down each column asking where something is going. Words such as noticed and placed only end in the same letters; they are a base word plus -ed and do not belong.
