Teaching Greek Word Parts

What it is

Many long words in science and history are assembled from Greek parts: bio means life, geo means earth, graph means write, logy means the study of, tele means far, phon means sound, meter means measure. Biology is the study of life; a telephone carries sound a long way.

When a child is ready

Teach it once the child reads multi-syllable words comfortably and has already worked with single roots such as port or spect.

If they struggle

Break the word at the seam and read each part with its meaning before saying the whole: geo plus graphy, thermo plus meter. Keep a running chart of parts with one known word beside each. The chart, not the worksheet, is what makes the next unfamiliar word readable.
