Teaching Latin Root: aqua = water
What it is
The Latin root aqua means water. An aquarium holds water for fish, aquatic plants and animals live in water, and aquamarine is the blue-green of sea water.
When a child is ready
Teach it at any point in Grade 5; the words are short and easy to picture.
If they struggle
With so few words, the risk is guessing by sight. Have the child underline aqua in each word and say where the water is. Aqueduct belongs to the same family with a changed spelling, a good word to add once the first three are sure.
