Teaching Suffix -ity

What it is

The suffix -ity makes a naming word out of a describing word, naming the quality itself: pure becomes purity, active becomes activity, real becomes reality, able becomes ability. The beat of the word falls on the syllable right before -ity.

When a child is ready

Teach it once the child works comfortably with describing words and reads four-syllable words.

If they struggle

Have the child finish the phrase 'the quality of being' out loud before writing anything. For spelling, a final e is dropped (pure, purity), and a base ending in -le shifts to -il (able, ability; possible, possibility), which is worth its own short list.
