Teaching Suffix -ic
What it is
The suffix -ic makes a describing word meaning 'having to do with': hero becomes heroic, history becomes historic, athlete becomes athletic, magnet becomes magnetic. The stress usually shifts onto the syllable just before the ending.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads three-syllable words and knows the base words being changed.
If they struggle
Say the base and the new word one after the other so the shift is heard: HIS-to-ry, his-TOR-ic. For spelling, look at the end of the base, since a final e or y usually goes (athlete, athletic; history, historic), and have the child cross it out before adding the ending.
