Teaching Suffix -ible
What it is
The suffix -ible means the same as -able, but it attaches to a part that is not a word on its own: visible, terrible, possible, edible, horrible. Both endings sound the same, so this one is decided by what remains when the ending is removed.
When a child is ready
Teach it directly after -able, because the pair is only learned by contrast.
If they struggle
Cover the ending and read what is left: depend is a word, so it is dependable; vis-, poss-, and terr- are not words, so they take -ible. Work in mixed pairs, since a list containing only one ending gives the child no choice to make and therefore no practice at choosing.
