Teaching Suffixes -ent and -ant
What it is
The endings -ent and -ant are the describing-word partners of -ence and -ance: different and difference, important and importance, assistant and assistance, patient and patience. Both are said the same way, so the pair is learned together.
When a child is ready
Teach it alongside -ence and -ance rather than separately, once the child reads three-syllable words.
If they struggle
Write both forms side by side every time: silent and silence, distant and distance. When the child already knows one form, the other almost always takes the matching vowel, which turns two long spelling lists into one.
