Teaching Word Root port (carry)
What it is
The root port means to carry. Transport carries something across, a portable chair can be carried, imports are carried in and exports are carried out, and a porter carries luggage.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads multi-syllable words and can take a prefix off the front of a word.
If they struggle
Act it out with a real object: carry it across the room, carry it in the door, carry it back out. Then read transport, import, and export again. The prefixes trans-, im-, and ex- do most of the work here, so teach them beside the root instead of after it.
