Teaching Word Root dict (say)
What it is
The root dict means to say or speak. You dictate when you say words for someone else to write, you predict when you say what will happen before it does, and a dictionary tells what words say.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads multi-syllable words and has met prefixes such as pre- and contra-.
If they struggle
Put each word into a sentence containing the word say: predict is to say beforehand, contradict is to speak against, a verdict is what the jury says. When a word will not open, the missing piece is usually the prefix, so teach that half rather than repeating the root.
