Teaching Measurement Comparison
What it is
Comparison is measurement without numbers: longer or shorter, heavier or lighter, holds more or less. The child sets two objects side by side and says which is which.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child follows the words longer, shorter, and same when they are used about real objects.
If they struggle
Most wrong answers come from comparing two objects that do not start at the same place. Stand both on the table against a book spine so the difference cannot be missed, then ask again. Practice the sentence in both directions, the rope is longer than the belt and the belt is shorter than the rope, because many children learn only one of the two words.
