Teaching Volume and Surface Area
What it is
Volume is the space inside a solid, found by multiplying length by width by height and counted in cubic units. Surface area is the total area of all the faces, found by working out each face and adding them.
When a child is ready
Begin once the area of a rectangle is secure and three numbers can be multiplied confidently.
If they struggle
Build the box from cubes for volume, and cut a cereal box open along its edges and lay it flat for surface area; the six rectangles are then visible and can be measured one at a time. Before choosing a method, ask what the answer is counting, the cubes that fit inside or the card that wraps around, since that question is the whole difference.
