Teaching Probability
What it is
Probability describes how likely something is, first in words, from impossible through unlikely, even chance, and likely to certain, then as a fraction: one red marble among four gives a probability of 1/4.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can write a fraction of a set and say what the whole is.
If they struggle
Count the favorable outcomes, then count all the outcomes and write that total below the line; reversing those two is the standard error. Draw from a bag thirty times and record the results, because they will not match the fraction exactly, and talking about why they do not is part of the lesson rather than a fault in it.
