Teaching Order of Operations (PEMDAS)
What it is
PEMDAS is a way to remember the agreed order for working an expression: parentheses, exponents, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. In 5 + 3 × 2 the multiplication is done first, giving 11 rather than 16.
When a child is ready
Teach it when the child meets expressions with more than one operation and all four operations are already fluent.
If they struggle
PEMDAS misleads children into doing every multiplication before any division; those two are worked left to right, so 12 ÷ 3 × 2 is 8, not 2. Have the child circle the step to do next and rewrite the whole expression on a new line, one operation at a time.
