Teaching Order of Operations with Nested Parentheses

What it is

Nested parentheses are groupings inside groupings, such as 4 × [12 − (3 + 5)]. The innermost pair is worked first, and each pair disappears as it is resolved.

When a child is ready

Teach it once the ordinary order of operations is reliable with a single set of parentheses.

If they struggle

Have the child mark the innermost pair, then rewrite the entire expression after each step so the line gets visibly shorter. Counting the brackets first — as many closing marks as opening ones — catches copying mistakes before any work is done.
