Teaching Arrays and Equal Groups
What it is
An array is objects set out in equal rows, like eggs in a carton. Four rows of three is written 4 × 3, and counting by threes four times gives twelve — the bridge from equal groups to multiplication.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child skip counts by twos, fives, and tens and can share objects into equal groups.
If they struggle
Have the child build the array with counters, count one row, then skip count the rows aloud while pointing at each one. If rows and columns get muddled, turn the array a quarter turn and show that 4 × 3 and 3 × 4 hold the same twelve counters.
