Teaching Order of Operations

What it is

The order of operations is the agreed sequence for evaluating an expression: parentheses first, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right.

When a child is ready

Teach it once all four operations are fluent and the child meets expressions with more than one operation.

If they struggle

Have the child underline the operation to do first before computing anything, and rewrite the expression one step at a time. Most errors come from working left to right regardless of operation.
