Teaching Mean Median Mode

What it is

These are three ways of describing the middle of a set of numbers. The mean is the total shared out equally, the median is the middle value once the numbers are in order, and the mode is the value that appears most often.

When a child is ready

Begin once a list can be added accurately, divided, and put in order.

If they struggle

Nearly every median error comes from not sorting the list first, so make writing out the ordered list a required step even when the numbers look nearly in order already. With an even count of values, take the two in the middle and find the number halfway between them. Working all three on the same small set, in one sitting, is what makes the difference between them clear.
