Teaching Roman Numerals
What it is
Roman numerals write numbers with letters, I, V, X, L, C, D, and M, added together, except that a smaller letter placed before a larger one is subtracted, so VI is 6 and IV is 4. The pages read them, write them, and add and subtract with them, reaching 1,000 by grade 4.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child adds and subtracts small numbers mentally and can hold two number systems apart.
If they struggle
The subtraction rule causes nearly every error. Learn the seven letters and their values first, read left to right adding, then learn only the six subtracting pairs: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM. On the add and subtract pages, convert both numerals to ordinary numbers, do the arithmetic, then convert the answer back.
