Teaching Tally and Frequency Tables
What it is
At this level a frequency table organizes a larger set of data: the categories down one column, tally marks in the next, and the total in the third. The finished table is then used to answer questions or to draw a bar graph.
When a child is ready
Begin once tally marks are read fluently in fives and a column can be totaled.
If they struggle
Add the total column and check it against the number of items collected; if the two disagree, something was tallied twice or missed, and no answer taken from that table will be right. Fill in every total before answering any question, since reading answers straight off the tally marks is where the mistakes come from.
