Teaching Reading and Interpreting Graphs
What it is
This is answering questions from a graph or table someone else made: reading one value, comparing two, finding a total, and saying what the graph shows overall. The graph may be a bar graph, a line graph, or a pictograph.
When a child is ready
Begin once single values can be read from each kind of graph.
If they struggle
Teach one fixed order and keep to it: read the title, then both axis labels and the key, then the question, then the graph. When a question asks how many more, require both numbers to be written down before any subtracting, because that is where children answer with one of the two values instead of the difference.
