Teaching Pie and Circle Graphs

What it is

A pie chart shows the parts of one whole: the circle is everything counted and each slice is a share of it. At this level children compare slices, which is largest, which two are about equal, which is about half the circle.

When a child is ready

Begin once halves and quarters are understood as parts of one whole.

If they struggle

If a slice is read as a count of items, say again that the whole circle is the total and ask what fraction of the circle this slice takes up. Fold a paper circle into halves and quarters, then hold it against the chart to judge a slice, since eyes are poor at estimating angles and a folded circle is not.
