Teaching Word Problems
What it is
Word problems put arithmetic into a story so the child must decide which operation the situation calls for before computing.
When a child is ready
Begin with one-step problems as soon as the operation itself is understood.
If they struggle
Read the problem twice, act it out or draw it, and ask what is being joined, separated, compared, or shared before choosing the operation. Write the number sentence, then solve.
