Teaching Word Problems
What it is
Two-step stories with five-digit numbers and two-digit by two-digit multiplication. One equation is written for each step, and the child says whether the answer should be larger or smaller than the start.
When a child is ready
Ready once five-digit addition and subtraction and two-digit multiplication are accurate.
If they struggle
Estimate both steps with rounded numbers first. If the worked answer is far from the estimate, find which step went astray.
