Teaching Collecting and Sorting Data
What it is
This is the first half of data work: asking a question, collecting the answers, and sorting them into groups in a tally or table before any graph is drawn. Favorite fruit, eye color, and a week of weather are the usual subjects.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can sort objects by one rule and count each group without losing the place.
If they struggle
If the totals do not add up to the number of people asked, a category was invented partway through. Decide the categories before the first answer is recorded and add an other row at the end for anything that does not fit. Starting with a question that has only two or three possible answers, such as cats or dogs, keeps the first attempts clean.
