Teaching Spelling Changes: Drop the e, y to i
What it is
Some base words change before an ending. A silent e drops before an ending that starts with a vowel: share, sharing; place, placed. A y after a consonant changes to i: carry, carried; happy, happier; try, tries.
When a child is ready
Teach it after the plain endings -ed, -ing, -er and -est are read and spelled without a change.
If they struggle
Children tend to keep the e or keep the y. Work backwards from the finished word: find the base word inside it and say what happened to its last letter. Two questions settle most cases: does the ending start with a vowel, and is the letter before the y a consonant?
