Teaching Contractions
What it is
A contraction is two words pushed into one, with an apostrophe where letters were left out: did not becomes didn't, we are becomes we're, you will becomes you'll. Won't is the odd one, standing for will not.
When a child is ready
Teach contractions once the child reads the full pairs (did not, we are, you will) without effort.
If they struggle
The apostrophe goes where the letters came out, not between the two words: didn't, never did'nt. Write the two words, cross out the dropped letters, and put the apostrophe in that gap. It's deserves a minute of its own: with the apostrophe it always means it is.
