Teaching Compound Words
What it is
A compound word is two smaller words joined into one, with a meaning that comes from both: sun and rise make sunrise, bed and time make bedtime, note and book make notebook.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child reads the small words easily on their own.
If they struggle
A long compound can look like a new word. Draw a line between the two small words, read each, then push them together. If the split lands in the wrong place, look for a small word the child already knows at the start: birth in birthday, rain in rainbow.
