Teaching Endings That Change Jobs
What it is
Some endings change the job a word does in a sentence: teach becomes teacher, a person; help becomes helpful, a describing word; quick becomes quickly, which tells how. The base word is still there, but the kind of word has changed.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child can point out the naming word and the action word in a simple sentence.
If they struggle
Cover the ending, read the base word, then uncover it and ask what kind of word it is now: a person, a thing, a description, or a how. Building one base into a whole family (care, careful, careless, caring) shows the pattern faster than practicing endings one at a time.
