Teaching Making Words Plural
What it is
Making a word plural changes it to name more than one. Most words add -s (book, books); words ending in s, x, ch, sh, or z add -es (box, boxes); a word ending in a consonant plus y changes the y to i and adds -es (baby, babies). A few change shape entirely: child and children, foot and feet.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child spells common one-syllable words and can hear that boxes has an extra beat that books does not.
If they struggle
Sort the words into piles by rule instead of practicing a mixed list. Say the plural aloud: if you hear an extra syllable, it takes -es. Keep the change-shape words, mice, teeth, men, geese, on their own short list, because no rule will produce them.
