Teaching Plural Rules: -es, y to ies, f to ves
What it is
Most words add -s to mean more than one: kids, teams, games. Words that end in s, x, ch or sh add -es, which adds a syllable: classes, taxes, peaches, dishes. A few words that end in f change it to v first: leaf, leaves; knife, knives.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads the base words and can hear the extra beat in taxes or dishes.
If they struggle
If the child writes dishs or taxs, say the plural aloud and clap: one clap more than the base word means -es. Sort a handful of words into two piles, -s and -es, and let the hissing sounds at the end of the base word explain the piles.
