Teaching Ten Frame Relationships
What it is
A ten frame is two rows of five squares. Filling it shows a number by its relationship to five and ten: 7 is a full row of five plus two, and it is also three short of ten.
When a child is ready
Use ten frames once the child counts to ten and fills the squares one counter at a time, left to right.
If they struggle
Show a filled frame for a second, then cover it and ask how many, so the child sees the amount instead of counting it. If counting starts anyway, cover the full top row and ask only about the bottom row, then add the five back on.
