Teaching Mazes

What it is

Pencil mazes used for the fine-motor control and the plan-ahead habit that number work needs: holding a line, looking a few steps ahead, and going back when a route closes.

When a child is ready

Ready as soon as a child can hold a pencil and stay roughly inside a wide path. No number knowledge is assumed.

If they struggle

If the line wanders out of the path, do the route with a finger first and only then with the pencil. When a child rushes into dead ends, ask them to trace ahead with a finger and say where it goes before committing.
