Teaching Rounding and Estimation
What it is
Estimation uses rounded numbers to find an answer that is close enough to check work or make a quick decision: 48 + 33 is about 50 + 30, or 80.
When a child is ready
Teach it after rounding is secure and before it is needed to check multi-digit computation.
If they struggle
Have the child estimate before every computation and compare afterward. If the estimate and answer are far apart, one of them is wrong, and that habit catches most errors.
