Teaching Perimeter and Area
What it is
Perimeter is the distance around a shape; area is the number of square units that cover it. A 3 by 4 rectangle has a perimeter of 14 and an area of 12.
When a child is ready
Teach perimeter after measuring length; teach area after multiplication as arrays.
If they struggle
Walk the perimeter with a finger and count units; cover the area with square tiles and count. Keep the two ideas separate until each is solid, then compare them on the same shape.
