Teaching Line Graphs
What it is
A line graph shows how one thing changes over time, such as temperature through a day or a plant's height over weeks. Points are plotted against two labeled axes and joined, so the slope of the line carries the story.
When a child is ready
Begin once bar graphs are read confidently and values can be read from a scaled axis.
If they struggle
A line graph answers questions a bar graph cannot, so teach the reading of the line itself: trace it with a finger and say rising, falling, or level before any number is read. For when did it grow fastest, look for the steepest climb rather than the highest point, since the highest point answers a different question and is the usual wrong answer.
