Teaching Multiplying Decimals
What it is
Multiply decimals as though the points were not there, then count the decimal places in both factors and give the answer that many: 1.2 times 0.3 has two decimal places altogether, so the answer is 0.36.
When a child is ready
Begin once multi-digit multiplication is fluent and decimal place value is understood.
If they struggle
Count the decimal places in the original problem and write that count down before multiplying, rather than trying to recall it once the digits are on the page. Estimate as well, since 1.2 times 0.3 is a little under a half, which makes an answer of 3.6 plainly wrong without rechecking a single digit.
