Teaching Dividing Fractions

What it is

Dividing by a fraction asks how many of that fraction fit inside the amount: 2 divided by 1/4 is how many quarters are in 2, which is 8. The written method multiplies by the reciprocal, the second fraction turned upside down.

When a child is ready

Begin once multiplying fractions is fluent and a reciprocal can be written without hesitation.

If they struggle

When an answer bigger than the starting number looks wrong, go back to the question, how many quarter cups fill two cups, and count them out at the sink with real measuring cups. Invert the second fraction only and never the first; writing keep, change, flip above the problem before starting prevents that slip.
