Teaching Converting Fractions and Decimals

What it is

At this level any fraction can be turned into a decimal by dividing the top by the bottom, so 3/8 is 0.375, and a terminating decimal becomes a fraction by reading its place value and simplifying, so 0.6 is 6/10, which is 3/5.

When a child is ready

Begin once long division carried to decimal places is fluent and simplifying fractions is secure.

If they struggle

When the division stalls because 8 will not go into 3, remind the child to put a decimal point and zeros after the 3 and carry on dividing. Memorizing the common ones, halves, fourths, fifths, and eighths, removes most of the labor, so keep that short list visible while the harder conversions are worked.
