Teaching Adding Decimals
What it is
Adding decimals works exactly like whole-number addition once the decimal points are lined up, so tenths add to tenths and hundredths to hundredths: 3.4 plus 0.75 is 4.15.
When a child is ready
Begin once decimal place values can be named and multi-digit addition with regrouping is fluent.
If they struggle
Line up the points, not the right-hand ends; that is the whole difficulty. Have the child write the points under one another first, fill the empty places with zeros so 3.4 becomes 3.40, then add. Round each number to the nearest whole as a check: 3.4 plus 0.75 should land near 4, so an answer of 11.5 says the digits were pushed right instead of aligned.
