Teaching Converting Decimals and Fractions

What it is

This converts between two ways of writing the same amount: 1/2 is 0.5, 3/4 is 0.75, and 0.25 is 25/100, which simplifies to 1/4. Tenths and hundredths do most of the work at this level.

When a child is ready

Begin once decimal place value is understood and equivalent fractions can be found.

If they struggle

Rename the fraction so the bottom number is 10 or 100, then read the decimal straight off: 3/5 becomes 6/10, which is 0.6. If the bottom number will not become 10 or 100, that fraction belongs to a later lesson and should be set aside rather than fought over. Money helps, since a quarter is 0.25 of a dollar and the child has held one.
