Teaching Adding Fractions
What it is
Adding fractions with the same denominator means adding the top numbers and keeping the bottom: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4. Different denominators must first be renamed as equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
When a child is ready
Teach like denominators first, after equivalent fractions are understood; unlike denominators come later.
If they struggle
The classic error is adding both tops and bottoms. Draw the parts: three fourths is still fourths. Say 'fourths plus fourths make fourths' the way 'apples plus apples make apples.'
