Teaching Dividing Decimals
What it is
Dividing a decimal by a whole number keeps the decimal point directly above where it already is. Dividing by a decimal means moving both points the same number of places first so the divisor is a whole number: 4.8 divided by 0.6 becomes 48 divided by 6.
When a child is ready
Begin once long division and multiplying decimals are both accurate.
If they struggle
Make the point move a separate written step before any dividing starts, and move both numbers by the same number of places or the answer changes. Estimate first, since 4.8 divided by 0.6 is about 8, so a point put in the wrong place shows up at the start rather than at the bottom of the page.
