Teaching Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers
What it is
An improper fraction has a top number at least as large as the bottom, such as 17/5. A mixed number writes the same amount as a whole number and a fraction, 3 2/5, because five fifths make one whole and 17/5 is three wholes with 2/5 left over.
When a child is ready
Begin once fractions can be named from pictures and multiplication and division facts are fluent.
If they struggle
Draw the wholes: seventeen fifths means seventeen pieces, so circle five at a time and see how many circles and how many loose pieces there are. In a calculation, make converting every mixed number to an improper fraction the first written step, because multiplying the whole numbers separately from the fractions is the standard wrong route. Convert back at the end and check the size against the numbers it started with.
