Teaching Subtracting Decimals

What it is

Subtracting decimals follows the same rule as adding: line up the decimal points, fill the empty places with zeros, then subtract with regrouping. 5 minus 2.35 is worked as 5.00 minus 2.35.

When a child is ready

Begin once adding decimals is accurate and multi-digit subtraction with regrouping is fluent.

If they struggle

The whole-number case is where children stumble, so write 5 as 5.00 before starting and treat that as part of copying the problem down. If regrouping across the point goes wrong, work the same problem in cents, as $5.00 minus $2.35, and set the two answers side by side; the money version is usually right when the bare decimal is not.
