Teaching Multiplying Whole Numbers
What it is
This is multiplication where both numbers have more than one digit, such as 46 × 23. The first line multiplies by the ones, the second line multiplies by the tens and so begins with a zero in the ones place, and the two lines are added together.
When a child is ready
Start after multiplying by a single digit with regrouping is accurate and the child can multiply by 10 and 100 mentally.
If they struggle
The missing zero on the second line is the most common error by far; have the child write that zero before multiplying anything, not after. If the digits drift out of line, turn lined paper sideways so each column of digits sits in its own lane.
