Teaching Factors and Multiples

What it is

A factor divides a number evenly — 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 are the factors of 12 — while a multiple is what you get by multiplying it, so 12, 24, and 36 are multiples of 12. One fact reads both ways: 3 × 4 = 12 makes 3 a factor of 12 and 12 a multiple of 3.

When a child is ready

Teach it once multiplication facts are quick and division is understood as multiplication reversed.

If they struggle

The two words get swapped constantly. Have the child find factors by testing 1, 2, 3, 4 in order and writing each pair (1 and 12, 2 and 6, 3 and 4) until the pairs meet, which shows when the list is complete. Multiples are just the skip-counting sequence, so say them aloud.
