Teaching Parts of a Fraction
What it is
This names the two parts of a written fraction: the denominator below the line says how many equal parts the whole was divided into, and the numerator above it says how many of those parts are counted.
When a child is ready
Begin once a fraction can be read aloud and the matching parts of a shape shaded.
If they struggle
If the two words will not stick, tie denominator to its position, it is down, and to its job, it names the pieces as fourths or eighths. Then have the child read every fraction on the page aloud in words rather than as two digits, since three fourths says which word belongs to which number and 3 over 4 does not.
