Teaching Comparing and Ordering Fractions
What it is
Comparing fractions means deciding which of two is larger and putting several in order. With the same denominator the top numbers decide it; with the same numerator the smaller bottom number is the larger piece; otherwise both are renamed with a common denominator.
When a child is ready
Begin once fractions can be named from pictures and equivalent fractions can be found.
If they struggle
When 1/3 is called smaller than 1/8, go back to paper strips folded into thirds and eighths and lay one on the other. More pieces means smaller pieces, said out loud while pointing at the strips, then compare that same pair in writing straight away so the picture and the symbols meet.
