Teaching Equivalent Fractions
What it is
Equivalent fractions are different names for the same amount: one half equals two fourths equals four eighths.
When a child is ready
Teach it after the child can name and draw simple fractions and compare halves, fourths, and eighths.
If they struggle
Fold the same strip of paper in halves, then fourths, then eighths, and shade the same amount each time. The picture proves equivalence before the multiplication rule explains it.
