Teaching Fraction Word Problems

What it is

These are stories that have to be solved with fractions: sharing a pizza among four, finding how much of a jug is left, adding two parts of a cup. The child has to decide what the whole is before doing anything with the parts.

When a child is ready

Begin once simple fractions can be named and drawn and a one-step word problem can be read independently.

If they struggle

Ask what the whole is in this story and have the child draw it, one pizza, one hour, one dollar, then shade the parts the story mentions. Most wrong answers come from the whole changing partway through, such as treating half of a small pie and half of a large one as the same amount.
